Croatia in Summer

Hello friends

Having visited many countries, and often more than once, a few have and undoubtebly will remain my favorite… I am focusing today on my recent visits to Croatia – we went mid June 2018, and again in December. two visits and two very different experiences – Summer & Winter

First visit: June 2018

It has always been a desire of my hubby’s to visit Croatia, so when I came across a last minute special for a 7 day cruise from Trogir, on a small yacht, we were in. We decided to combine the cruise with a few days touring some of the highlights of Croatia. The tour company we ended using for all our plans, was called Croatia-a-la-carte. They run a family business, and were just awesome to deal with. Turned out they are ex-South Africans, which was such an added bonus. Their boat, Robin Hood, which they lease for the season, is well kept and has an absolutely awesome small and personal team who took care of all our needs.

we landed up being one of the youngest couples on board, but it did not detract from the experience – infact, there is something to be said for 60something year olds and their attitude of embracing life.

Out of all the Southern Islands we visited, the most picturesque and one I will certainly return to is Korcula. Even though a very touristy island, it still maintains old world charm, with pretty little boutiques calling out to me, and the little pubs and restaurants along the promenade were so inviting,  with one of the best places to watch the sunset – glass of wine in hand (obviously). This area is also a ferry boat ride away from the wine region of mainland Croatia.  It goes without saying, that Dubrovnik, Hvar, Mljet National Park and Split, were all so beautiful and sailing into some of these different ports everyday, was one of the most woderful experiences of the trip.

We also toured from Zagreb, the capital, which is a bustling small city – and absolutely magical in winter… more about that next time. We went to the Pitvlice lakes and this is with out a doubt one not to miss. Breathtaking scenery and the most beautiful natural waterfalls! You walk amongst the lakes on wooden walkways and bridges (you along with a couple thousand other people) so I would suggest maybe visiting off peak season for this experience. apparently July and August are jampacked.

What probably stood out for me throughout our visit of Croatia was that this country is still pretty untouched by full on tourism, and compared to the rest of Europe, quite inexpensive to eat, stay and sightsee. Times are changing though – so if you are interested then now is the time – and I would definitely say May to September are the perfect time to visit!

I hope you enjoyed reading and please come back soon for more in travel!
